A Message From our Executive Director
I have always been interested in environmental issues, especially after working with NASA scientists and researchers on the Global Change Program. Air pollution in the atmosphere has been well publicized; it is an important issue and most everyone is aware of how it is affecting our planet. On the other hand, indoor air pollution (IAP) has not yet received the public attention I believe it deserves. We are beginning to see the wave of health effects from IAP, including a 74% increase in the incidence of asthma in just over 10 years.

Indoor air pollution is an issue with national (and international) consequences. In this country alone, there were over 14 million lost school days and three million lost work days last year. IAA is focused on the more local impacts of this problem – children and the at-risk populations for whom this issue is very personal. I believe that our program of community education and in-home air quality evaluations will help individuals, families and the community to create healthier home environments. The social and economic effects of addressing indoor air pollution will be significant at every level in our community.
